I read an article online last weekend that was talking about the fact that lower price point digital video cameras such as The Flip are doomed. The reason given was because cell phones and still cameras will invade the video market and pretty much take control.
From a consumer standpoint, I couldn’t disagree more.
First, if you don’t have a video camera like The Flip you are absolutely missing out! I take mine everywhere, mainly because it is so small and simple to use. The version that I have cost just over $100 and it’s extremely durable. I also have a swanky video camera at home that I’ve used six or seven times – a complete waste of money. The more expensive camera is larger than The Flip, I have to carry it in a little case, I’m paranoid I’m going to mess it up, etc. It just isn’t practical for me.
The Digital Camera Argument
My digital camera (still photos) means a lot to me and it wasn’t the least expensive item in the world. It simply is more fragile than my Flip and just like the more expensive video camera I referenced; I’m scared I’ll mess it up.
The Cell Phone Argument
I am almost certain that the iPhone update that is coming in July will have a video capability which is great, but it would never replace my Flip. My iPhone is somewhat of a lifeline and there is no way I’d subject it to some of the things my Flip has gone through.
Value
I promise I’m not being paid to talk about The Flip, it’s just a tool that has allowed me to capture a lot of great memories over the last six months and to me that adds a lot of value.
