Thanks for stopping by – let me get straight to the point. I need you to donate $10, minimum, to help me with a community project that will benefit the homeless. The fact that anyone is homeless is terrible, but the misery is amplified during the winter when the temperatures drop and shelters are over capacity.
I’ve adopted three streets in Greensboro, NC, one of which is a portion of Lee Street that gets a lot of traffic. This particular section of road is close to several homeless shelters and is frequently littered with trash.
I recently started thinking about different ways to increase the cleanliness of the portion I adopted, but also wanted to come up a way to help the homeless.
Here’s what I’ve come up with. To start, I would like to have 10 homeless men/women spend (at minimum) one hour with me picking up trash. For doing so I will pay each individual, at a minimum, $10 for one hour’s worth of work. While this may seem like a small amount, it will likely help pay for a couple of meals.
Initial needs to make this work include:
- $100 minimum (would be great if I can raise more to buy warm clothing)
- 10 “trash picker uppers” as I call them (tools to pick the trash up with) that are around $30 each
- 30 – 40 large trash bags
- 10 homeless participants
The Home Depot on Eugene has graciously donated the “trash picker uppers,” which was probably the projects largest hurdle, and the City of Greensboro has provided the trash bags. The second big hurdle is the funding component.
If you could possibly help I would be extremely grateful – this $10 donation (minimum) means you might be sacrificing a couple Starbucks coffee or a glass of wine. Think about how cold it was when you left the house this morning. Imagine sleeping outside in the weather under those same conditions – then add a little rain on top of that.
